Rogue is another great choice for for Valor or Swords Bards. Between Expertise and bonus skills (and Thieves Tools), this will make you the perfect skill monkey, while improving your options and damage output in battle. I think two levels is great, but 4–5 is also fantastic, though that might mean you won’t have Extra Attack until level 10–11.

Compatible Barbarian Multiclasses: Barbarian/Fighter Focusing on Strength, a Barbarian/Fighter gains a Fighting Style, Action Surge, a potential to increase crits (especially with Reckless Attack), and possible battle maneuvers. In Your Opinion, What Are The Best Multiclasses

The subjectively best multiclass I’ve ever played (and boy do I love me some mixed levels) was Knowledge Cleric 1/Abjuration Wizard X. This is a character that has almost all the tricks and toys that a straight-leveled wizard gets, while mitigating the defensive drawbacks of the squish mage and adding on some great ribbons.

D&D Tips: Multiclassing Like A Pro – Dungeon Master's Workshop

The best way for a fighter to improve his or her average damage per round is to find a way to make use of their bonus action. With a two-level dip, you gain enough ki points to make two unarmed attacks as a bonus action twice between rests. Now, in D&D 5e I see a potential path to this concept by combining Paladin of Ancients (8-11

Most OP Paladin Multiclasses

Most OP paladin multiclasses. A lot of attention is given to warlock, bard, and/or sorcerer around here, and with good reason: smite is already pretty damn powerful on a paladin, and the warlock recharges a couple of slots on a short rest, and the bard and sorcerer add a bunch of slots. All these classes synergize well with the CHA requirements

Our damage comes out to be 2d8+4 + 2d8+4 + 2d8+4 + 2d8+4 + 2d8+4 + 2d8+4 +1d8+4. That is many dice to roll. The three attacks in one attack action combined with the action surge ability and using a bonus action to swing the long sword gives you a damage range of 41-132. Even without the action surge, your damage range is 23-72.

Multiclassing in Dungeons and Dragons 5e can be rewarding, but it can also end up cheating you out of abilities you'd otherwise get -- it mixes together aspects of various classes and does so in a way unique to this edition of the game.
