How do I give an intramuscular injection?
The maximum amount of medication for a single injection is generally 1 ml. For immunizations, a smaller 22 to 25 gauge needle should be used. Avoid muscles that are emaciated or atrophied; they will absorb medications poorly. IM injection sites should be rotated to decrease the risk of hypertrophy.
