What do the numbers mean for college courses?

There are standard formats that many colleges use to signify dates, levels and titles. Most college courses are identified by three to four numbers. For example, the first digit may indicate the class year, the middle two digits may identify the subject and the last digit may indicate the number of credit hours. Course Levels 101

Which is the first number in the course code?

The first element in the three-digit course code is the class level. For most schools, the numbers range from one to five. The first number in the code will be as follows for each class: Freshman level: 1 Sophomore level: 2 Junior level: 3 Senior level: 4 Advanced level: 5

Are there any classes that have the same course number?

No two courses at a college will share the exact same course number. The most useful thing for students to understand about these numbers is how to distinguish between upper-level credit and lower-level credit.

Where can I find my college course number?

Look for a five digit number such as "23104." Read your class timetable. You can find your class timetable in an online learning platform, such as WebCT, Banner or Blackboard, if your college has not provided you with a printout of it.
